OUR LOVE STORY

OUR LOVE STORY

How we met

Emily and Sam were set up by Emily’s Aunt and Sam’s coworker and longtime family friend, Mary Kate, who happens to be a very successful matchmaker! Their first date was at Starbucks in December and then Sam suggested we go on a Christmas light hunt. They walked around Port Credit for a few hours and then, as the date was going so well and Sam was vetted, they decided to go hang out at Emily’s new place. They hung out and talked for 13 hours and the rest was history. They have now been together for over 8 years and have lived together for 7.

The proposal

Sam was extremely sneaky with his proposal and I had absolutely no idea it was about to happen. We had just moved back to Port Credit and had planned to spend the morning hanging pictures and doing odd jobs and then later in the afternoon we were going to the Donegal Pub with my parents. It was a completely normal Saturday. At around 11, Sam said he bought me a present because he felt like it. I opened a beautiful Tiffany Necklace. I later found out that Sam called this a ‘Distraction Noodle’. He assumed that if I was distracted by a different gift, that there would be no way that I would know the proposal was coming, and he was right!

Later in the day, I received a call from our concierge saying that I had a package. I went down to get it and noticed it was a shoe box wrapped with a card on top (later I would notice that the wrapping paper said ‘Happily Ever After,’ but at the time I didn’t even notice). I read the card in the elevator and it was a beautifully written card by Sam. After 8 years together and still no proposal, I still didn’t even assume it was a proposal. I just thought he was being his usual sweet self!

When I got upstairs, I opened the shoes and was so happy because they were my favourite shoes from Vessi. I gave Sam a hug and thanked him. He told me to look closely at the shoes. Then, I saw a heart charm on the laces that said ‘Marry Me’. I was completely shocked, and turned around and saw Sam down on one knee with the most beautiful ring that he designed himself (with no direction from me whatsoever!!). It was the most amazing moment of my life!

We were so excited! I then realized that we were late for dinner with my parents. I suggested we cancel but Sam said it would be fun to show them the ring and celebrate. We walked over to the pub and a bunch of our immediate family were there to celebrate with us. Sam absolutely killed the engagement, made it so special and it was so us! There are so many little details that Sam thought of that made it a complete surprise and so thoughtful!
